Salon Crush: Ryder

This month we are Salon Crushing on Ryder. Read on to find out what makes Ryder a top Auckland salon and what salon owner Greg Murrell’s greatest dream is…

When and why did you open Ryder?

The original Ryder opened in June 1999 in Albert Park. I wanted to grow a new, unique salon hair culture. The salon was very spacious with a view of the park and had a very unhurried vibe.
We really nurtured our relationship with the fashion industry. It was clear to me that hairdressers needed to be skilled and savvy enough to work in the salon on clients but also to be able to operate in the fashion environment on models.

Describe your salon in 10 words or less.

A relaxed urban sanctuary.

Name three muses and why they inspire you.

Patti Smith, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Twiggy. All women who have a strong sense of themselves in the image they project. All committed and fearless in their own way.

Your favourite Boutique Brands product?

Davines Your Hair Assistant Blowdry Primer. Hands down the best blow-dry product ever. It adds body and anti-humidity protection but in an invisible and natural way.

Your greatest dream as a salon owner?

To impart enough growth and change in my staff so when the time comes for them to leave, a piece of Ryder remains with them as a legacy. My mission is to grow people. As a stylist I always wanted to develop a strong creative reputation. I knew I would need to stay connected to creativity to sustain my interest level throughout my career.
