Salon Crush: Matt Forsman Hair

Today we launch a new regular feature, showcasing beautiful New Zealand salons! Our first Salon Crush is the stylish Matt Forsman Hair salon in Wellington, which uses Original & Mineral colour.

When and why did you launch your salon?
We opened almost three years ago now. The time has passed so quickly! I had a strong idea of what I wanted to achieve in my own salon and the type of environment I wanted to create, so I just went for it.

Describe your salon in 10 words or less.
Simple, clean and comfortable, a great space to work in.

Name three key muses/inspirations, and why they inspire you.
– My colleagues: Past and present, I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing people in my career, and I’ve learned a lot from every one of them.

-Other salons: I have a lot of respect and admiration for a few of what I would consider to be NZ’s top hair salons. I have followed their movements throughout my career, and hope to one day have a team of amazing hairstylists like they do.

– I hate to be a cliche hairdresser, but great magazines. I have a massive library of magazines, which I keep in the salon. I also love to spool through Instagram during down time. I follow a number of other hairstylists who are much better at putting their work up than I am.

What’s your favourite Boutique Brands product?

To single out one product would be too difficult, but changing to O&M  colour last year would have to be one of the best decisions I’ve made – it does what you want it to.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned as a salon owner?

Great people are the most important thing in this business. It pays to surround yourself with them.

What’s your greatest dream as a salon owner?

Personally, I’m really pleased to see the improvements that are being made in terms of haircare technology and the move away away from harmful chemical use, which benefits both clients and staff. I hope this continues to improve, and if we can end up using products which are as natural as possible without compromising on results, it would be a win-win.
